STEP 1: INSPECTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

We start by inspecting your deck for any damage, such as loose boards, cracks, or rot. If needed, we'll recommend minor repairs before staining. In some cases, if the decking is far too weathered we will NOT recommend staining as it will be a waste of money. Instead we will propose a brand new build.

STEP 2: DEEP CLEANING AND/OR SANDING

A properly prepared deck is essential for stain adhesion. This may require a deep clean and/or a thorough sanding job. We use a specialized deck cleaner/algae remover (if necessary) to remove dirt, mildew, and old stain residue. This step helps the wood absorb the stain evenly.

STEP 3: 1st COAT APPLICATION

Once the deck is fully dry, we tape off any sections as needed and apply our high-quality stain using specialized applicators. We work carefully to ensure even coverage and prevent streaks or blotches.

STEP 4: DRYING AND CURING

The stain needs time to dry properly. Depending on the weather conditions, drying can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. During this time, we advise avoiding foot traffic to allow the stain to cure fully.

STEP 5: 2nd COAT APPLICATION

We once again apply a very thorough coat to allow for deeper penetration and more protection to the lumber.

STEP 6: FINAL DRYING TIME AND CLEAN UP

We begin by assessing the overall condition of your fence — checking for rot, loose boards, damaged posts, and any existing coatings. If sections are too deteriorated to restore properly, we'll tell you honestly before we start, not after. In some cases we'll recommend replacing isolated boards first so the final result is clean and uniform.

STEP 2: CLEANING WITH CUTEK QUICK CLEAN

We apply CUTEK Quick Clean to remove surface grime, dirt, and contaminants from the fence boards. This step is essential — CUTEK Extreme must be applied to a clean surface to penetrate properly and perform as designed.

STEP 3: WOOD REVIVER APPLICATION (WHERE NEEDED)

For fences that have greyed, developed tannin staining, or show significant weathering, we apply CUTEK Wood Reviver. This product strips the grey, removes surface contaminants, and restores the original colour and grain of the wood — giving CUTEK Extreme the best possible surface to penetrate and protect.

STEP 4: 1st COAT OF CUTEK EXTREME

With the fence fully prepped and dry, we apply the first coat of CUTEK Extreme using specialized applicators, working carefully to ensure even coverage across all boards, edges, and exposed end grain.

STEP 5: DRYING AND CURING

The first coat needs time to fully diffuse into the wood before the second coat is applied. Depending on weather conditions and wood porosity, this typically takes 24 to 72 hours. We do not rush this step.

STEP 6: 2nd COAT OF CUTEK EXTREME

A second thorough coat is applied for deeper penetration, richer colour (when a Colourtone tint is selected), and maximum long-term protection.

STEP 7: FINAL INSPECTION AND CLEAN UP

We inspect every section of the fence to confirm full, even coverage, then clean up the work area completely. We'll also walk you through what to expect during the curing period before the fence sees regular use.

 

The single most common reason fences fail isn't the boards — it's the posts. And specifically, it's the point where the post meets the soil. Moisture, oxygen, and underground fungal activity work together at this zone to rot wood from the inside out, often long before any surface damage is visible above ground.

Yet the vast majority of fence installers set posts with zero protection at this critical point. We don't. Post base protection is a standard part of every Fence Longevity Plan we deliver — because restoring and staining a fence on top of posts that are quietly rotting underground is not a long-term solution.

WHAT WE DO

1. We inspect every post individually —

Before any staining work begins, we assess the base condition of each post, identifying any that show early signs of decay, soil contact damage, or instability.

2. We carefully excavate around the post base —

We dig out the soil around each post to expose the critical soil-line zone — the area most vulnerable to rot — giving us a clean, accessible surface to work with.

3. We apply a torch-on SBS-modified bitumen membrane —

This is the same professional-grade waterproofing material used by roofers on flat roofs. We wrap it tightly around the post at and below the soil line, then heat-bond it using a torch. The result is a fully conformed, airtight and watertight barrier that locks out the moisture, oxygen, and fungal activity required for wood decay.

4. We backfill and compact —

Once the membrane is secured, the excavated area is backfilled and compacted, leaving the site clean and the post fully protected.

WHY TORCH-ON SBS?

Self-adhesive wraps exist, but they rely on adhesion alone — and adhesion fails on the damp, weathered post surfaces you typically find underground. A torch-on bond uses heat to mechanically fuse the membrane to the wood regardless of surface moisture or texture. It's more reliable, more professional, and more permanent. We source our material locally from GTA roofing suppliers — the same supply chain that waterproofs roofs across the city.

This protection is bundled into every Fence Longevity Plan. It is not offered as a standalone service.

 

DECK RESTORATION PLAN

The longevity of a deck stain depends on several factors, including weather conditions, foot traffic, exposure to the elements and the quantity of leaves that are allowed to fall on the deck and deteriorate.

Some of our clients prefer to keep a rich color to the stain and choose to stain it every 2 years. Whereas in some cases you may wait 3 or more years. As mentioned above, it depends on many factors.

 

FENCE LONGEVITY PLAN

Because fences are not subjected to foot traffic or the surface abrasion that decks endure, the stain typically lasts longer. The primary variable for fences is sun exposure — a south-facing fence in full sun will fade faster than one that is shaded or receives less direct light.

As a general guideline, we recommend re-staining every 3 to 5 years, though some clients may find they can go longer depending on their conditions. One important advantage of CUTEK Extreme: even as the surface colour fades over time, the oil remains permanently mobile inside the wood — meaning structural protection is never fully lost, only the cosmetic appearance requires refreshing.

 

DECK RESTORATION PLAN
